Karamine

When roots are intertwined one another, they are called karamine (roots are tangled together). Because roots lying on top of nebari (visible roots of a tree) do not look favorable in terms of beauty, they are either carefully untangled at the time of uekae (repotting) or, when there are too many roots, those on one of the two sides are cut off.
