Enoki
Binomial name: Celtis sinensis
Family: Ulmaceae
Japanese name: Enoki
English name: Chinese Hackberry
Description: Enoki grows wild in seas, rivers and waterfront areas. Light-yellow male and female flowers bloom in April and May, but they are small and hard to spot. In October, reddish small fruits emerge. They are edible. Enoki is strong and has many small branches and leaves. A variety of tree forms can be created. As it loves water, a sufficient amount of water should be given if the soil surface gets dry. Be careful not to cause a mizugire water shortfall particularly in the growing stage between bud-shooting spring and summer. One idea is to cover the soil surface with moss to protect the tree against desiccation.
Viewing season: January-February (June for green leaves, October for yellow leaves)
