Hokidachi

Broom style. It refers to a tree that grows upright from its root, extends branches in all directions, and forms a semicircular crown at its head. The style is mainly seen in ”keyaki” (Japanese Zelkova) trees. Its form looks like a broom hung upside down. To produce a tree of ”hokidachi” broom style, growers need to make the tree branch out evenly and finely from its trunks. In addition, all the main and subsidiary branches must be evenly branched out. So growers are required to conduct a diligent ”metsumi” bud-trimming work, help increase new buds, transplant the tree every year, and to fix up root conditions. Careful management and care are necessary.
