Rosokume
Literally, candle-flame bud. It refers to a winter bud that grows in a lengthy candle-flame form. The buds are often seen in ”goyomatsu” (Japanese White Pine) and ”kuromatsu” (Japanese Black Pine). They come out from vigorous parts of a tree from autumn through winter. Compared with ”kompeitome” buds that will overwinter without growing long, it will send out new branches. Some ”rosokume” buds therefore need to be trimmed at an early stage.
