Bunjingi

Literal style. One of the bonsai styles, ”bunjingi” refers to a tree of slim trunk with meaningful curves, of fewer branches and leaves, and of no useless elements. But such a tree is full of delicate emotion that brews poetic and artistic sentiment. Originally, a tree of this style was loved mainly by ”bunjin” (writers). So, it is called ”bunjingi,” literally meaning writers’ tree. ”Bunjingi” trees are highly popular but the number of trees of this style is very small because they must be grown while keeping their trunks slim for a long period of time. ”Akamatsu” (Japanese Red Pine) and ”goyomatsu” (Japanese White Pine) are typical species of tree of this style.
