Furuhatori

Literally, cutting old leaves. It refers to the work of cutting off old leaves from summer to autumn to provide sufficient sunlight and improve ventilation to the root parts of branches. Evergreen trees keep leaves for one year to one year and a half. Leaves that came out a year earlier or two years earlier are collectively called ”furuha” (old leaves). Cutting old leaves with scissors is particularly effective for ”goyomatsu” (Japanese White Pine) trees.
